Hair Talk

Lets talk hair! I have been natural for 3 years now. I know my hair is very short for going on year 4 but I had a lot of trouble with my natural hair in the beginning. I did not know how to care for it or how to wear it without it just looking like a stupid afro. After 3 big chops, yes I said 3, I finally learned how to care for my natural hair. My number one problem before was wanting everyone else's natural hair instead of my own. I saw pictures of women with natural long and luscious hair and I wanted that hair! Finally, I realized that I needed to embrace the texture of my own natural hair. After my last big chop I decided that I didn't want my hair to just grow into an afro. I didn't want it to be the same length all around. Thus I went to my barber in Alexandria, VA and told him to give me a Mohawk. I think he was more excited than I was about it! I have continuously shaved my sides as the middle of my hair has grown out. I love my Mohawk! It's so different and unique. Now lets talk regimen.

Every 3 days I co wash with the Trader Joes Tea Tree Tingle Conditioner. I love this product. It has great slip and it is a natural product (for the most part). It makes for a great co wash. I finish my co wash with refrigerated Aloe Vera Juice. The chill of the juice shocks my hair cuticles which keeps that moisture into my curly locs. For a wash and go I use my handy dandy DIY Flax Seed Gel. I will link a video of how to make it below by Naptural85 (one of my favorite YouTube natural hair gurus).  For my twist outs (which is what I am rocking in my pictures above) I just oil my hair using my DIY oil recipe which has grape seed oil, vitamin e, jojoba oil, castor oil and hot six oil. I am cutting down on the amount of products I am using on my hair. I like to stick with natural products!

No Make Up Make Up

After my post about my LUSH Cosmetics review, I loved all of the feedback you guys gave me. Thus I decided to do this post for you all. This is my everyday no make up or natural makeup look. I usually do not wear much makeup daily. This look is what I wear basically, all the time. The products I use are super affordable and easy to find: A daily moisturizer, Feeling Younger Skin Tint by LUSH Cosmetics, Mac eye shadow in Embark, Lash Potion mascara by Revlon, a lash curler (you can find them in any drug store), MAC pro long wear concealer and MAC bronzing powder in refined golden. The first photograph of myself is with no makeup at all. The difference is very subtle with my makeup regimen. Which is what I love about this look. I still look like myself, just a tad bit better :)

If you all would like to see this look via YouTube please comment below. I am still on the fence about starting my YouTube Channel so with the help of your feedback I will make my decision!

Summer Isn't Over....Yet

Summer Isn't Over....Yet

It is hard to believe that we are already at the end of July! This summer has basically flew by. We are already seeing fall and winter styles in retail stores. We are already seeing fall trends rising. With all of the fall and winter talk in magazines and in retail stores I have gotten a little bitter. After all, summer isn't over just yet. So this is why I decided to style a summer outfit for today. I wanted this outfit to be as summery as it gets. And this says summer to me for sure.
As you all may know, I am truly obsessed with printed pants this summer. I also enjoy the "jogger" pants look. These pants found on Vila are 2 in 1. When styling printed pants I always do a casual tank or t shirt because you don't want to take away from the pants. After all, they speak for themselves. The accessories are essential summer wardrobe pieces. The key when adding accessories to any outfit is to make them compliment each other and the outfit as a whole. The black sunglasses compliment the black strip along the hat and the lighter tone of the hat compliments the racer back tank top. In order to incorporate the boho feel of the pants, I decided to go with a Greek styled sandal. This style has been in for several summers. I suggest everyone own a pair.
So although fall and winter is near, lets enjoy the rest of summer!

A Taste of Boho

This outfit was from yesterday's outfit of the day. I really love the bohemian and gypsy inspired style. I enjoy the care free look and I appreciate the chic flare as well. In the summer time I live in palazzo pants and chic tank tops. My whole summer wardrobe is basically built off of the two. I find most of my pants from stores like Marshalls, Urban Outfitters, Forever 21, Nordstrom Rack, etc. They are very affordable and they look flattering on all shapes and sizes.

Outfit details: Pants are from Marshalls for $20. Shirt is from Papaya for $7. Cuff is vintage from Flea Market. Handbag is by Cynthia Rowley found at TJ Maxx on sale for $75. Dainty necklace is from She's Unique in Oldtown, Alexandria for less than $100.

Another affordable look that anyone can pull off!

LUSH Cosmetics: Dark Angels Review

I love a good face scrub and this Dark Angels face and body cleanser is amazing! My skin loves this stuff. I have been using this cleanser for about a month or so now and it has become a staple in my skin care regimen. I was first introduced to LUSH Fresh Handmade Cosmetics about 2 years ago. I did not try any of their products until recently. One Saturday, my mother and I decided to peek into their Pentagon City store. The young ladies there were very helpful in explaining each product and giving their honest opinion on each one. They let me try the products I was interested in and they gave me suggestions as well. The store is great! The employees are wonderful and very knowledgeable about their product. After loads of fun at the store, I decided to purchase a cleanser (which is what I will be reviewing today), a facial and body exfoliant as well as a skin tint/highlighter. I love all of the products I purchased and I use them daily.

Now on to my review. The Dark Angels cleanser is known to get rid of blackheads, purify the skin and shrink the pores. I've had bad acne for quite some time now. I have gotten it under control thanks to my dermatologist in Alexandria, VA but now I have very oily skin, which can be caused by open pores. This is why I chose this cleanser. In order to shrink my pores and control those annoying blackheads I get occasionally. The scrub feels a little gritty when you put it on, like an exfoliant. The directions say to take a pea size amount in the palm of your hand and mix it with a little water. This breaks up the cleanser and makes it feel and look like mud. I leave the scrub on for a minute or two and it begins to harden like a mask. After my first use I could tell the difference of my skin. My skin felt softer and I had this amazing glow! If I had to rate this product out of 10 it would definitely get a 9. I would deduct a point for the cost, it's a little pricey.
But it is a great product after all!

Kimono Vest

It's Monday again. The most dreadful day of the week. But I'm feeling great! I'm wearing a gypsy inspired kimono vest found at TJ Maxx for $15. Pants are from Urban Outfitters for $20. My plain spaghetti strap tank top is from Forever 21. Shoes are also from TJ Maxx. I love these little wedge sandals. The heel height is perfect! I found these bad boys for $20 last summer. My entire outfit was less than $100. How awesome is that!

Stay positive today! Remember, you decide how your day will turn out :)

Baggy Pants

Today's outfit of the day is very simple and fun due to the start of the weekend. This morning I felt so relaxed and content with myself. I wanted to wear something very comfortable and chic to reflect how I was feeling. As I was getting dressed I realized that everything is very neutral today! For no apparent reason it kind of just happened that way.
Details:
Joes Jeans boyfriend style, Urban Outfitters pointed toe oxford style flats, Forever 21 chiffon tank top, Old Navy polyester hat, Deux Lux handbag, gold watch by Pink Accessories, Vintage coined charm bracelets. Love this look, its boyish but still very feminine. Share your ootd with me via instagram and twitter using the hashtag #brokecitygrl

Happy Friday folks!

Obsession: Pixie Hair Cuts

For the past few years we have seen many women going shorter with their hair cuts and styles. I have always loved shorter hair on myself. It liberates me to know that my hair does not define my beauty or myself. I am not afraid to cut my hair shorter or to have no hair at all. In my opinion, if you have the guts to cut off your hair you are truly happy with yourself. But this post is not a rant about short hair. This post is to idealize the newest haircut that has gotten so much popularity--the pixie cut. I am completely obsessed with this look. It's kind of a boyish but feminine cut with or without long bangs. Usually the back is tapered or cut very low. Some pixies are the same length all around. You can style it in many different ways. It is a very versatile look despite the shorter length.

Many celebrities have cut their hair into this style. To name a few-- Michelle Williams, Emma Watson, Halle Berry, Ginnifer Goodwin, Frankie Sandford, Rihanna, Miley Cyrus, Charlize and Anne Hathaway. These ladies rock the pixie cut! I think the key to rocking a pixie cut is to just be confident. Be confident in your appearance. If you are considering this look be certain that you are ready. Going for shorter hair can be tricky. And it is not low maintenance, shocking right. If any of you have pixie cuts or are thinking about going shorter comment below.
I would love to chat with you all about this obsession of mine!

Punk Chic

Punk Chic

I though it was high time I styled an outfit that was totally bada** and punk! This outfit is all of that and then some. I totally love this look! I decided to do this look after finding a super cute pair of leather jogger pants from Buffalo Exchange in Georgetown, DC. Side note, Buffalo Exchange is an amazing resale boutique. They have good quality used clothing for affordable prices. If you are looking to sell any of your clothes this would be the perfect place to do so!
This outfit was built around the leather joggers I purchased. The outfit is super easy to put together. Most of these pieces you should already have in your wardrobe--leather pants, cool shades and a knit or cotton tank top. I would wear this ensemble to a concert, an evening out with the girls or any causal event. I know this outfit may look to dark and punk for some but you can incorporate more color for a flirty look.
But I love the punk chic look!

Summer to Fall

Summer to Fall
It is hard to think that fall is near but in the fashion industry fall trends and styles are all the rave. We have moved on from the summer and am know looking forward to what fall fashion has to offer. Now if you are like me, I hate letting my summer clothes go to waste throughout the colder months. All of the maxi skirts and dresses, the flirty tops, the cutesy pants, etc. But with the proper styling you do not have to let your summer essentials sit in a bin all fall and winter
This post is the perfect way to show you all how to transition those summer essentials into your fall wardrobe. I took this olive cotton midi dress and transitioned it into a super chic ensemble for fall. In the summer, we usually pair our midi and maxi dresses with sandals, a fun bag and a hat with funky sun glasses. A midi or maxi dress is indeed a summer essential for us all. I have about 5 in my closet right now! Simply because they are so easy to style. For the fall, they can still be used as an essential. Paired with suede booties and a floppy wide brim hat adds a different look. I added this blush colored kimono to finish the look off. Now you have a boho, effortless outfit that will keep you warm once the cold weather progresses. I would even wear this in the winter. With taller boots and a heavy cardigan sweater.
Don't let those summer clothes go to waste this fall!

Happy Independence Day!

Today's makeup is inspired by July 4, of course! All of the fireworks and bright colors. For this look I chose to use fun pastel colors that complemented my skin tone. Most of the products used are by MAC. The eye shadows used are Embark, Electric Eel, Everything that Glitters and Malt. On my crease I used Embark. As a transitioning color I used Malt and on my lid I used Electric Eel. To finish off the eyes I used Everything that Glitters as my highlight for the inner corners of my eye. For the lower lash line I used Embark and Electric Eel to add definition and to brighten up my eyes.

For my skin I used MAC Pro long wear concealer underneath my eyes, around my nose and my T zone. I used the Lush skin tint (mentioned in my last post) as a highlight for my cheek bones and the high points of my brow bone. I used the Refined Golden bronzing powder to frame my face and bronze my cheeks for that golden tan look. To set everything I used MAC skin finish in color Medium Deep.

I hope you all enjoyed this fun makeup look and I wish you all a Happy 4th!
Have a safe and super fun day :)

Blue and Black

Today is a beautiful day! I felt inspired to actually get up and do my makeup. I usually do a simple "No Make Up" look every day but today I felt like doing something different. But before I get into my makeup look. I want to give you the details of my OOTD. Today I am wearing all neutral toned colors. My black harem pants are from Urban Outfitters. I purchased these pants at the beginning of spring. They were on sale for $19.99. I am not sure of the original price but who can argue with $20 pants. The shirt is from Forever 21. It is a basic high low cream and blue tank. It's always good to have a few simple but dressy tank tops in your wardrobe. They are super easy to style and they will go with just about anything. A blazer and jeans, a maxi skirt, denim shorts. You get the point. My sandals are super ancient. They are from DSW. Today I broke them! Which just gives me a reason to go shopping later on today :)

Now on to makeup and hair. In the last photo, you get an up close glimpse of my hair. Now today was a pretty bad hair day for me. But this photo captures my hair color very well. Last night, I did a bantu knot out on freshly washed and blow dried hair. This was my first attempt with my Mohawk. I did not like it at all this morning to say the least. But I will give you all more details on hair care and hair styles soon for my Mohawk.

My make up for the day is very simple and subtle. I did a subtle smoky eye using the Natural palette by NYX. For my face I used MAC pro long wear concealer in shade NW30. I did not use any foundation or tinted moisturizer. In the spring and summer months I find that my skin is very oily which makes me feel yucky with foundation on my skin. I used a bronzer and highlighter for my cheek bones and high points under my brow. The highlighter I used is by Lush. It is the "Feeling Younger" skin tint. I love this stuff! It is so beautiful and natural looking. I suggest everyone go out and buy one! For my bronzer I used MAC's refined golden bronzing powder. This bronzer has a little sparkle to it. Which I love obviously. I hope this helps you all and answers a few questions that you all may have. I will do a makeup tutorial soon.
Stay tuned loves!

July 4 Attire

July 4 Attire

Are you all ready for July 4? I love this time of year. It brings a ton of people together and everyone has a great time. From the yummy cookout food to the amazing fireworks lighting up the night sky, July 4 is my favorite time of the summer. Celebrating America's independence and being close to your loved ones. There is nothing better than that. No matter your plans for this Independence Day, be sure to drink lots of water and have a beautiful time!

Now on to my styling tips for your July 4th attire. When styling this outfit I tried to incorporate the red, white and blue which we all know are essentials in ever independence day outfit, decorations, etc. I wanted to make this outfit super fun and casual. That is how I see every independence day. You want to just have lots of fun, right! And what is more fun than a denim jumper? Nothing at all. This denim jumper is so adorable! It is very casual--perfect for a cookout. In this outfit, the jumper incorporates the color blue within our essential red, white and blue ensemble. The white leather tank top is very simple. Which is what this outfit needs. Nothing over the top and spectacular. Just funk and flare. The Converse sneaker and sunglasses are must haves when putting together an outfit like this one. They add more color to what could be a basic neutral toned outfit. The handbag is the only accessory you will need. I decided to go for a dark brown to contrast with the soft colors in the jumper and top.

I don't know about you all but I will be purchasing a denim jumper today! This outfit has definitely inspired me to do something super fun and different for this Friday. I hope you all enjoy your holiday and...
Happy 4th!
